What is an MOT?

An MOT test is a yearly inspection required by law on all vehicles in the UK that are more than three years old (and some vehicles that are older than 1 year). The test follows strict DVSA criteria to assess whether your vehicle is roadworthy. An MOT test centre with DVSA-approved examiners must perform a wide range of vehicle safety checks, including lights, tyres, seatbelts, and emissions.

FAQ’s

  • An MOT is a regulatory requirement that ensures your vehicle is safe to operate on public roads and does not emit excessively dangerous pollutants. This means that if your vehicle does not have a valid MOT, you may face penalties.

  • You will be unable to drive your vehicle legally or renew your road tax unless you have a current MOT certificate. The penalty for failing to have a valid MOT certificate is a fine of up to £1,000; but, if your car fails the test and is deemed 'hazardous,' driving it could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 points on your licence. To be classified as dangerous after a MOT test, your vehicle must either pose an imminent risk to road safety or have a significant impact on the environment due to emissions.

  • The only thing you have to bring is the vehicle under test!

Our tester will be able to find the existing MOT details for your vehicle by searching the DVSA database. You can also schedule MOT tests up to one month (minus one day) earlier your current due date without losing the existing expiry date, giving you 13 months on your MOT instead of 12. Book your MOT today.

  • If you are requested to present your MOT certificate after an accident and it is out of date, your vehicle insurance claim may be affected, especially if you are injured. Alternatively, due to the DVSA's recent digitalisation of the MOT testing system, police and mobile camera units can now check remotely to see if your vehicle has a current MOT. They can check their database using your registration number and may stop you if your MOT is expired.
